This week, the SUNRISE Project proudly participated in the prestigious ISCRAM 2025 Conference in Halifax, Canada, an international gathering dedicated to information systems for crisis response and management. Representing the SUNRISE consortium, Stefan Schauer from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology led a dynamic joint session focused on Critical Infrastructure Protection, co-hosted with Terje Gjøsæter’s track on Universal Design.

The session showcased a series of compelling presentations by leading researchers and practitioners:

  • Flavio Dusse introduced his work on using vulnerability-based models to enhance public crisis information systems.

  • Rob Grace explored the role of AI in empowering untrained individuals to administer first aid during emergencies.

  • Jeroen Wolbers emphasized learning from success stories in cybersecurity to foster more resilient systems.

  • Terje Gjøsæter presented innovative approaches to improve team collaboration and situational awareness through digital mapping in crisis scenarios.

  • Stefan Schauer shared insights from the SUNRISE Project on identifying disaster-specific critical entities (DSCEs) tailored to specific crisis events.

Beyond the sessions, ISCRAM 2025 provided an exceptional platform for rich dialogue among experts in crisis response, risk management, and disaster preparedness. The conference concluded with a memorable rescue exercise in Halifax Harbour, underscoring the importance of practical experience in emergency response.

Our sincere thanks to the ISCRAM 2025 organizers, especially Ron Pelot, Ahsan Habib, Erica Fleck, and Aaron MacNeil, for delivering a remarkable and inspiring event.

We are proud to see the SUNRISE Project’s work highlighted on such a global stage and look forward to continuing these important conversations at ISCRAM 2026 in The Hague!
