SUNRISE at the Projects to Policies Seminar 2023

SUNRISE Project Coordinator Antonio Álvarez Romero (ATOS) and dissemination partner Judith Kieran (Carr Communications) recently represented SUNRISE at the Projects to Policy Seminar 2023.
Hosted by the European Commission (DG Home) and the European Research Executive Agency (REA), the two-day event took place on June 14th and 15th at the Renaissance Hotel’s conference centre in Brussels, Belgium.
Projects to Policy is an annual event that aims to bring research and policy together, helping policymakers and practitioners to manage security and safety challenges. The research projects invited to participate are all within their first year and funded under the European Commission’s ‘Horizon Europe’ research and funding programme.
This year’s seminar featured a combination of plenary presentations and breakout sessions, arranged by the projects’ various thematic areas. Day One included a Welcome Address, presentations on Dissemination & Exploitation in Security Research, as well as Communication in Security Research. Attendees then heard from experts in DG ECHO, Europol, CEPOL and DG Home.
For the second half of Day 1, SUNRISE was included in a breakout session with 16 other projects, focused on Fighting Crime & Terrorism, including Resilient Infrastructure. The audience heard from each project individually, with opportunities for questions and comments from the relevant policy makers present. Project Coordinator Antonio Alvarez presented an overview of SUNRISE, as well as the relevant policy priorities and challenges for the project.
Following these breakout sessions, attendees returned to the main conference room to hear presentations on the Exploitation of projects and innovation uptake. The seminar concluded with reports from the morning’s breakout sessions and closing remarks from the Head of Innovation and Security Research Unit at DG Home.
Day 2 began with further breakout sessions; this time centred around keywords. Antonio Álvarez represented SUNRISE in a group of nine projects covering topics such as: Surveillance of wide areas, public spaces, infrastructure, preparedness, situational awareness & data. Meanwhile, Judith Kieran participated in a breakout session of 11 projects, covering: Climate-change, extreme weather, disasters, criminal threats to environment, threats to health, laboratories.
